Gandalf the Grey came from a shelter in Quebec after he was placed on a euthanasia list due to overcrowding. Since arriving into foster care, he has been receiving ongoing veterinary care due to his head tilt. The hope is that, with continued medical care, he will continue to improve.
Gandalf the Grey, or Big Grey as his foster mom has nicknamed him, has been through a lot. Despite the health challenges he’s facing, we are seeing some of his personality start to peak out as he gets stronger and stronger. He’s a big Flemish boy with an appetite to match and will act as though he hasn’t eaten in DAYS every time pellets or greens arrive. The drama is real with this big suck – he hates getting his eye drops put in and will dramatically roll over whenever you come near him with the bottle, only to pop back up again if he hears a bowl of pellets rattle or a snack bag crinkle. He will lay his head on your hand during pats time and is just the sweetest, gentle giant.
Gandalf gets oral medications twice daily as well as eye drops to help him fight to get better. Despite his tilt, he is a clever bun who works hard to maintain his independence. Due to his tilt, Gandalf lives primarily in a dog crate that is lined with soft blankets and a large flop bed to help him keep his balance. He eats and drinks on his own – though he loves to be hand fed.
August Update:
Gandalf’s journey continues to be one requiring patience and consistency. He’s improved significantly from day one where he was immobilized by his head tilt. He now moves freely within an x-pen. His litter habits are generally pretty good, although when he’s feeling dizzy he tends to hang out in his litter box, and poop next to it. He’s a great eater and is incredibly food motivated. He drinks from a side hanging water bottle and he loves it.
Gandalf’s entire world is on it’s side, so it’s important to approach him in a way that lets him know you are a safe person. He’s shown some pen aggression if you move your hand in front of his face too quickly (he looks up with one eye and doesn’t have the same field of vision as normal bun has), so his foster mom generally strokes and holds his head while she cleans or puts down food.
He still rolls but can righten himself. He is on two medications daily (~every 12 hours) which he takes pretty well. We’re still working with vets to figure out how best to continue his care but he’s a fighter and wants to stick around.
He’s generally very sweet, and wants the chance to get better and better.
